The utility jacket is everywhere right now and for good reason — it’s the perfect slouchy lightweight coat to add some grit and gravitas to a frilly spring dress and casual flats. Here are five of our favorites:

bargainista on coats

I’m sharing this information because I’m silly. You see, I moved to New York recently, but all of my winter stuff is still in storage in San Francisco. Now, I have a ton of warm stuff because I just moved back from Seoul, South Korea. My plan was to get back home to California before the winter chill hit, but that hasn’t quite worked out.

What that means is I had to find inexpensive but still cute coats and outerwear ASAP.

Good for me I was watching TV this weekend and had a chance to see this on CBS’ The Early Show. They had a segment with “Real Simple” magazine’s Jaimee Zanzinger. The title of the segment is Bargainsta Winter Coats. With all of the stuff I have, I just saw no reason to spend a lot on a new coat when hopefully I’ll go back and fetch all of my stuff in a few weeks. It’s just that the heaviest thing I have is a leather jacket. However, based on this segment, I bought something today from the WalMart website. I’m glad I saw it.

Here is a link to the video segment: Bargainista Winter Coats

(Note: the model wearing the Uniqlo coat comes out third, but the info on the screen says the gray coat she’s wearing is from Old Navy. It’s not. The coat after that one is the Old Navy coat.)

Put something in the comments if you know of any other great places to get inexpensive coats and outerwear. Everyone is watching their bottom line, so let’s help each other out!

Stay solvent AND stay warm!
