Carey Mulligan on Boutiques.com from Google

Google just got a whole lot cooler. Yes, that Google… The search engine and online advertising giant.

Google has launched the fashion and shopping website Boutiques.com that uses the power of advanced search, celebrity and designer profile ’boutiques’ and a ton of personalization features.  Google, known more for its web indexing, algorithm expertise and technology prowess than its sense of style , hired and collaborated with “taste-makers” to make the site a desirable destination.

Google engineers picked taste-making brains, and produced a beta  site that is only for the ladies in the U.S. market right now. But it has great potential to go global, once they iron out the kinks and find out what users like and dislike, want more or less of, etc.

Here’s how Google’s director of product management, Munjal Shah, depicted the collaboration with taste makers on Boutiques.com in a recent blog post.

We asked them not just to curate 10-50 great items they loved, but also to teach our site their style and taste. They did this by telling us what colors, patterns, brands and silhouettes they loved and they hated. They took a visual quiz that taught the site to understand their style genre: Classic, Boho, Edgy, etc. Our machine learning algorithms use this information to enable you to shop all of the inventory in the style of that taste-maker, on top of the 50 items they’ve hand-curated.

The site has advanced filtering options so you can see a ton of image and style options in one place. Options include inspiration photos, a way to complete the look, visual search availability and, of course, a slick new app for iPad users.

No iPad yet? Don’t worry. You can still experience the site from any old web-enabled computer.

Happy boutique browsing!

The following post is from Mark Shrem.
“I’ve predicted winners for this years Oscar nominees for the 82nd Academy Awards. I have intentionally not read or listened to any reviews or other opinions on these movies, in order to have a clean point of view of the films presented.”

Best Picture:
Despite what the “experts” and everyone else is saying (The Hurt Locker), I’m going to have to stick to my guns and give my pick to James Cameron for Avatar. The simple fact that his movie has changed the way we watch and make movies and speaks for itself. This movie broke barriers in film making. The Hurt Locker, an amazing film worthy of best picture, if it wasn’t going against Avatar. The Hurt Locker was by far a better directed movie however, the movie itself is no Avatar.

Best Actor:
Great job by Jeff Bridges, and he may take it since he’s due for an award, however Morgan Freeman’s flawless performance playing Nelson Mandela was outstanding and I think he deserves the Oscar. Solid performance by the other nominees, however I didn’t see Colin Firth’s performance.

Reality star and fashion designer Lauren Conrad is launching a new and more affordable line for Kohl’s in October.  The clothing collection inspired by the Cali lifestyle will be called LC Lauren Conrad and will range in price from $20 to $60 (a much lower price point than her Lauren Conrad Collection which went up to about $300 for a simple jersey dress).  The line will be available in 300 Kohl’s department stores nationwide and online at Kohls.com.

“We are very excited to announce our partnership with Lauren Conrad, a pop culture icon whose style resonates with our contemporary customer,” said Don Brennan, senior executive vice president of Kohl’s Department Stores.

“We are confident the LC Lauren Conrad collection brings customers both the contemporary style and the world-class brands they want at a price that delivers incredible value,” he said.

Once the collection is launched, the line may expand into accessories, shoes, jewelry, handbags, and intimates.  Are you excited to see this new collection or are you tired of Lauren Conrad?

Model Liksula Cohen

The feud between blogger Rosemary Port and model Liskula Cohen doesn’t seem to be burning down anytime soon. Port received a lot of media attention when her identity was revealed behind the anonymous post on the website “Skanks in NYC.”  Google was forced by a court order to turn over the blogger’s identity after Port called 37-year-old Cohen a “ho,” a “skank,” and an “old hag” on the blog.

According to the New York Daily News, the 29-year-old Fashion Institute of Technology student blames Cohen for all the controversy surrounding the whole situation and also plans to sue Google for $15 million.

“”This has become a public spectacle and a circus that is not my doing,” Port said.

“By going to the press, she defamed herself.”

Cohen made an appearance on Good Morning America defending herself.  The model says she forgives Port, but she still seems a bit bitter.

Whose side are you on?

keke4keke5Miley Cyrus and Max Azria’s clothing line isn’t the only collection for Wal-Mart getting buzz.  Nickelodeon is teaming up with the discount department store to launch a tween fashion line for its “True Jackson, VP” series for its back-to-school season.  The girly and affordable line for Wal-Mart is inspired by the Nickelodeon show about a teen executive named True Jackson (played by 15-year-old Keke Jackson) who works at a fashion company called Mad Style.

Everything in the Mad Style by True Jackson collection will retail for under $14 and will be available in sizes 7 to 16.   Nickelodeon and Wal-Mart hope to target the network’s Tween audience between the ages of six t0 eleven-year-old girls.

“We wanted to bring the success of ‘True Jackson’ and the opportunity for customization and a fashion opportunity to as broad an audience as we could,” said Hal Snik, senior vice president of domestic licensing at Nickelodeon. “We want to have cutting-edge fashion at a price point so the girl can mix and match and not go wrong.”

Coach’s more affordable line Poppy introduced earlier this year debuted in stores and online at Coach.com just last month.  The pieces in this trendy collection include a wide variety of colorful clutches, handbags, shoes, and jewelry which range in price from $198 to $598.  With a number of sequined ballet flats, multi-colored statement necklaces, and fun prints, the collection is perfect for a young or young at heart crowd.  Have you checked out the Poppy collection yet?

If you thought there weren’t enough fashion bloggers already, well you can now add another name to the list.   Perez Hilton, celebrity gossip columnist at PerezHilton.com is launching his own celebrity fashion blog under another name and alterego, CocoPerez.com.  The layout is similar to his original website we all know and love (admit it, you’ve checked out the site now and then).  So far, there haven’t been any doodles on the blog photos, but we’ll see how long that lasts.  I actually think his opinions are usually right on and I think it’s going to be an interesting blog.  Will you be adding CocoPerez.com to your blogroll or daily read?

There’s a certain time in between seasons before you trade your sandals for your fall and winter boots.  This is normally when the classic ballet flats come in.  They are perfect for the transition into fall and can be worn when it is still warm out and cover your toes when the weather begins to cool down. There are many versions of the ballet flat, but below are some of my favorites under $100.

Kobraa

Just like the little black dress, every woman needs a pair of basic black flats.  The Kobraa from Steve Madden in Black Patent ($49.99)  has always been my choice for a comfortable yet chic look.  The thing I love most about this style is that it also comes in gold, snakeskin, and many other colors and patterns.

Kazler

A little embellishment is a great look for these stylish shoes.  Here is another great pair by Steve Madden.  The Kazler in Pewter ($89.95) is a fun choice to jazz up an outfit.

Jasper

You can never go wrong with metallic… especially with these Minx Metallic pair from Topshop ($50).

Jasper

The zippered flower detail on this pair of Madden Girl Jasper flats ($39.95) adds edge to the feminine shoe.  Affordable price + fashion forward style = perfection.
